Let's rewind life to three months ago. The weather had just started to get warmer, we were dreaming of days on the beach and eating right so that we would be looking and feeling our best when the summer months arrived.
Now fastforward to the present moment. Here we are! Summer is in full-swing but so are barbecues, patio drinks and frozen cocktails. If you feel like you are falling off the wagon, you aren't alone. But the worst thing you can do is to make excuses, get back into bad habits and undo all of your hardwork up until this point.
Here are our best tips on how to have fun, treat yourself but also continue to look and feel your best this summer. (Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too!)
1. Workout in the Morning
Scheduling time to workout in the summer can be tricky. But the longer you leave it in the day, the less likely it is to happen. So set your alarm a bit earlier and get your workout done first thing in the morning. It will rev up your metabolism for the rest of the day, get those happy endorphins flowing and set the tone for an awesome day ahead. Don't make excuses. Just get up and get it done. If you keep doing this day-after-day, eventually it will become a habit that will change your life!
2. Pack Your Breakfast and Lunch
Packing your breakfast and lunch is a great habit to get into, no matter what time of year it is. When you leave this simple task undone, it can leave you hungry and lead you to reach for junk. Instead, take a bit of time to plan out breakfasts and lunches you can make in advance and have throughout the week, like our Blueberry Overnight Oats and Chickpea, Avocado & Feta Salad.
3. Grill All The Veggies
Barbecue season does not have to mean burgers, ribs and hot dogs. Grilling veggies gives them so much flavour and can help you fill up your plate with goodness. You can throw vegetables directly onto the grill or into a grilling basket. Our grilled veggies of choice are red pepper, zucchini, tomato, red onion and portobello mushroom! Grill em' up, toss them in a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, season with sea salt and black pepper and prepare for some serious deliciousness.
4. Infuse That Sparkling Water
STOP! Walk away from the diet soda. Be smart about the way you quench your thirst and steer clear of empty calories like sugary iced tea, lemonade and soda. Grapefruit Thyme Sparkling Water anyone?
5. Host a Clean Dinner Party
Do something different and host a clean dinner party. There is nothing better than spending time with your greatest friends while fueling your body's with nourishing food. We've done it in the past and it was a ton of fun!
6. Always Contribute Something Healthy
Invited to someone else's place? Try to aways contribute something to the food table that will nourish your mind, body and soul. Our vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free Mac n' 'Cheese' is always a hit at BBQs, potlucks and picnics!
7. Adopt Some Healthier Camping and Cottaging Habits
Does camping and cottaging send your healthy efforts into a tailspin? Don't let it. Plan ahead and check out our suggestions for healthy campfire snacks and dinners on the grill. What other time of year can you make salmon in a tinfoil packet over a fire? EXACTLY.
8. Go Outside and Play
There is plenty of time to be cooped up inside during the winter months so take advantage and get outside! Nature has a huge impact on our mental health. Ride a bike, rollerblade, hike, swim, kayak, jump on a pogo stick. We don't care what you do as long as you are outside soaking up Vitamin D and all the therpaeutic benefits that mother nature has to offer.
9. Eat Local
Nothing makes us happier than summer produce. Peaches, nectarines, tomatoes... we just can't get enough! There is something so satisfying about preparing a meal with locally grown produce.
So find your nearest farmer's market or fruit stand and grab whatever catches your eye. And hey, while you are there, pick up a basket of peaches and try out our delicious dairy-free Peach Ice Cream. Like, right now.
10. Be Happy
Try to enjoy all the beauty summer has to offer and don't stress. Health is a journey and it is all about finding a balance that is right for you. No one is asking you to be perfect and what fun is perfect anyway? Just do what you can, with what you've got, wherever you are and be happy doing it. If you are feeling down or overwhelmed, shift your mindset. So many times we look at eating healthy as a chore and this can be so harmful to our mental health. Celebrate your healthy habits instead of looking them at an obligation. Take it one day at a time and take time to remind yourself that you are making decisions that will move you closer to where you want to be. Summer is short and life is good. Soak it up!
